Will You Be Throwing Out Your Dr. Seuss Books After Finding Out How Racist He Was?

Just last week was World Book Day, which is most popularly known in America as Dr. Suess’ Birthday. So, naturally, people wrote about the nationally known event, the legacy that Dr. Suess left and how important his work was to many.

And that was when two articles hit the World Wide Web about Seuss, his current influence and whether he is even worth celebrating at all. The first article was found via Facebook, from a children’s literature blog called  The Conscious Kid. It openly demanded that the National Education Association discontinue their promotion of Dr. Seuss Day, which is also known as Read Across America Day.

Their reasoning was because of the political cartoons that Seuss had drawn during World War II.

The second article was from The Atlantic, which had also highlighted the political cartoons from Seuss during that same era, however, they were allegedly used as a means to inspire the people of today to stand up against the “America First” political climate that stood in our country at that time.

Some would pop the big question, “was Dr. Seuss a racist whose books should never be read to children ever again? Or was he attempting to light the way when building up the strong fight that we now have against the democracy that has attempted to ruin our very existence in Amerikkka?”

Though some people said that they would throw out all of their books from the childhood author, others openly admitted that they did recognize the extremely insensitive imagery that was used to describe the Japanese, as well as the horrible and dehumanizing caricatures that politically denoted Africans and African Americans.

Since we have all read his books and fallen in love with characters like “Cat in the Hat,” we can’t help but to ask ourselves ‘is it better to allow these cartoons to stay in their marked positions of our history? Or should they be completely erased so that no other child will have to experience the horrors of such a careless and insensitive man?’

Check out the disturbing images at the bottom and tell us what you think? Will you be getting rid of all your Dr. Seuss memorabilia just like the others?
