Does the black church keep women single and lonely?

Black women love going to church. In fact, they are the most religious group of people in the entire country. Church can be a wonderful, uplifting experience for some. But there are others who wonder if it leaves women too beholden to the whims of a pastor, who may want them for money, sex or simple loyalty.

Deborrah Cooper thinks that the church actually hinders a black woman’s ability to find a suitable mate by leading her to expect that the right man must come packaged and pre-approved by both Jesus and her pastor. By only seeking out men inside the church, Deb says that it leaves black women with a bunch of weak, lonely options, with many of these men sleeping with many women inside the church because there are so few men for them to compete with.

Do you think that the church helps women wait for the right man, or causes them to pass up the right men? That’s the issue being discussed in this dialogue below.
