Charles Brooks invented the Street Sweeper

A Black man from Newark, New Jersey invented the first ever self-propelled street sweeper truck that was patented on March 17, 1896.

His name was Charles B. Brooks.

Prior to Brooks’ invention, people would often use horse-drawn machines to clean the streets.

Brooks’ street sweeper was a truck that had brushes attached to the front fender, and it pushed trash to the curb.
