Barbara Walters asks Richard Pryor if he has AIDS

Most people know about Richard Pryor nearly dying after setting himself on fire 30 years ago. The scene was played out in the film “Jo Jo Dancer,” a very dark film that was funny at times, and depressing at others. Richard Pryor then did an interview with Barbara Walters, who asked him why he set himself on fire. He told Walters that he wasn’t freebasing and that the fire wasn’t in the least bit drug related.

But it turns out that Pryor was lying at the time.

Years later, the two had a conversation and the first question in the interview was “Do you have AIDS?” Pryor says that he was annoyed that people would get off the elevator when he got onto it, and said that the stigma of people believing he had AIDS had become too much to bear.

Walters also asked about his use of intraveneous drugs and all of the blood transfusions he’s received over the years. Richard says that you shouldn’t write about people having AIDS unless you’re sure about it, especially in Hollywood.

Regardless of his health situation, Richard Pryor goes down as one of the great comedians of all time.

Can any comedian today compare to him?  What about Eddie Murphy, Kevin Hart, or Dave Chapelle?

Personally, we think there will never be another Richard Pryor, he was amazing.

What does Richard Pryor mean to you?

The interview is interesting and you can watch it here.
