Alexander Miles created the automatic doors on elevators

Alexander Miles didn’t invent the elevator, but he improved the way it functioned.  He actually created a device that allowed the elevator doors to open and close automatically.  And he patented this design in 1887. Prior to that, elevators doors were opened manually.
